Review: Rutt’s Hutt

Coronaries Served in Under 2 Minutes

If you live in Northeast Jersey you’ve probably heard of Rutt’s Hut. Maybe your grandparents took you there when you were younger, and maybe you listened to them wax philosophical about the good old days and necking in the parking lot (Ew, Pop. Ew.)

Back when you could get a mug of beer and a hot dog for 13 cents, the world was a different place. Luckily, you can still visit that long-forgotten world. The interior of Rutt’s is virtually unchanged as of circa 1962, when a young, up-and-coming Greek family took the place over after Mr. Rutt passed away (heart failure? a solid guess).

The lure of Rutt’s Hut is, singularly, its famous hot dog, called a ripper for the way it tears open when it’s deep-fried. You can get your dog in varying degrees of done-ness, but if you say hot dog, they hear ripper. These suckers must be good for all the strict rules and regulations in place. You can’t get a dog prepared any other way (as in, not cooked in boiling oil); all your toppings must be ordered separately - on the side; and don’t even think about asking for a toasted bun. Oh, and the mere suggestion of a vegetarian alternative will probably result in you being ejected from the premises. Only cash is accepted, and don’t expect the waitress to be nice to you unless she’s in a good mood (full disclosure: that’s me!).

Most people frequent this establishment because they know what they’re getting – super cheap, super greasy and delicious food in (usually) record time. But if you happen to be in the mood for a well-prepared steak, roast duck, or filet of flounder for a low price and with all the sides, you could be pleasantly surprised. As long as you’re not looking for atmosphere.
