Review: Shades of Hoboken

Color Me Delighted

One of the many benefits of living in Hudson West as opposed to Manhattan is access to more spacious living situations, with actual rooms (yes, plural). UNLESS, you’re like me and you live with roommates (yes, plural), one of whom is a tall, obtrusive Canadian that skips rope and hangs his underwear in our shared space.

What does this have to do with new Hoboken restaurant / jazz venue, Shades of Hoboken? Two weekends ago, my mom was up from D.C. for a visit, and we were confined to my bedroom because of the Canadian’s antics. After going a little stir-crazy, we decided to venture down to the street for something to eat and for relief from our foul moods.

I decided to try out Shades, a new spot in the Monroe Center on 720 Monroe Street. The décor was modern, in that slightly weird, industrial sort of way. Exposed pipes, steel and exposed brick. The giant (covering the entire wall) paintings of a crazy, old red-head were supposed to add warmth, I guess. I don’t know if I want to look at a crazy cat lady’s red hair while I eat.

On Sunday evenings, the stage is empty and the restaurant is not too crowded. The service was amazing and honest (I was warned by the manager not to order the soup because it was too salty). If the chef was having an off day, my mom and I couldn’t tell. My marinated asparagus and prosciutto was amazing and Mom loved her house salad w/ champagne vinaigrette. It’s also worth mentioning they are one of the few Jersey restaurants that offers Kobe beef.

Then there was the dessert. I’ve had dreams about the apple tart with cinnamon ice cream since I left. It was perfection and really an updated take on the classic apple pie a la mode. Other treats included the chocolate mousse cake and deep-fried cheesecake – hey, I’m from the South, I’ll eat anything if you batter and fry it.

On the following Friday, I returned to Shades to check out their jazz scene and to satiate those apple tart dreams I’ve been having. I was not disappointed. The music was not especially memorable, but was a welcome change from typical bands you can catch in the mile-square city. Also, for those of you who drive, they offer free onsite parking.

All in all, I think Shades of Hoboken, crazy cat lady and all, is a great spot for dinner and (background) music. I’m personally looking forward to my next trip. Must. Have. Apple Tart.
