Fantasy Baseball Fans: Get out of the house!
Ok fantasy nerds, it’s a known fact that you love to sit in your apartment and watch ESPN’s live stat-tracker, but there are other options out there for you, right in the town of Hoboken. Heck, bring a pen and pad of paper to a bar if you really feel compelled to write down a running total of RBI’s and runs scored for your team; it’s better than sitting alone in your apartment. To celebrate the fantasy baseball season that’s starting to heat up, (as we slowly head toward summer weather), here is a list of the Top 5 Hoboken bars to watch baseball and track your fantasy squad.
5) Mikie Squared:
When you walk into Mikie Squared, you’ll need to zoom in on a seat at the bar, which usually isn’t too difficult. The food here (particularly the sandwiches) is tremendous, making it so comfortable to watch a game here. There are only three TVs at the bar, but they cover the entire bar area and you can clearly see what’s happening on the ESPN stat-tracker. The drink specials make this a hidden gem, with $2 draft beers on weeknights, plus some generous weekend specials. So grab a buffalo chicken wrap, relax, and watch the biggest game of the day on a flat screen television as you call your buddies for scores for other games. Atmosphere must count for something, right?!
4) Green Rock:
If you can deal with the young crowd and the endless 80’s music, this is a great location to watch a big ballgame. The drinks, once again, are cheap, highlighted by $1 8oz drafts, Mon-Fri from 5pm-8pm. Moreover, there are TVs everywhere — it’s like someone came in and said, “If we put up enough TVs, we can pack this place up”, and it worked. I’m convinced the owner has an inside connection at Best Buy. While definitely not a sports bar, there are mostly flat screens throughout the whole bar, including two big screen TVs. And they seem to always have different games on different televisions, which gives you a couple viewing options, letting you feed your obsession appropriately.
3) Four L’s:
Here is the sleeper of the bunch! Let’s face it; whoever re-modeled this former restaurant into a bar must have consulted Sam Malone. This is the perfect layout for a bar, with great food, affordable drinks, and it’s never overly crowded. When you walk in, there are tables and televisions to greet you. More televisions are behind the bar and more tables are in the back. The brick oven pizza is wonderful, and the fresh, new feeling makes it very easy to get into a game. The problem is you probably will be limited to 1-2 games, but let’s not be picky — that’s what blackberries are for, to get scores and stats that you can’t live without.
2) Black Bear:
As we head into the major leagues of serious sports bars, Black Bear is a place that definitely caters to people who want to watch multiple games at once. The food is excellent, the drinks are moderately priced, and there’s an upstairs full of big screen TVs as well as a downstairs bar surrounded by TVs. And all of the aforementioned TVs are brand new flat screens, which always makes viewing more pleasurable to the eye. At Black Bear, Mr. Fantasy geek can certainly catch the at-bats of most of the players on his team as they occur, if he maneuvers from television to television - all without ever spilling his drink.
And the #1 Hoboken location to watch games and catch what all the players of your fantasy team are doing is…………………
1) Liberty Bar!
Listen, this place is a bit overpriced and can get very crowded, but if you can get a seat, you just can’t find a better spot to watch EVERY game you would want on different televisions. There are TVs all over the walls and above the bar to accommodate viewers watching from every conceivable angle. Every TV shows a different game, with the most popular viewing options playing on the two big screen monitors. The pitchers of beer are a fair deal, and with everyone in the place there to catch a game, there’s a jovial, loud ambiance. Yes, fantasy nerds, you can see any of your players while he bats, regardless of who’s playing who — just ask the bartender to put that game on.
There you have it, the best spots in Hoboken to watch some baseball and still follow your fantasy team. Don’t be afraid to venture out and leave your laptop behind. Sure, fantasy baseball is addictive, but that doesn’t mean you’re confined to your living room. There are options out there, Mr. Fantasy geek. You won’t be disappointed.
