Review: Sultan Gyro

So Disappointed I Almost Couldn’t Write

Updated Aug. 2, 2007
I love Turkish food but what I ate at Sultan Gyro was so terrible I actually almost forgot to write this review. I went there because the Munchmobile actually enjoyed and recommended it. I guess those roving munchers aren’t always right after all. Jason from Off The Broiler also enjoyed them. Go figure.

The best thing about the doner (lamb) gyro platter was its rice, which was soft and flavorful. The meat, however, was grainy and dry. It was actually difficult to swallow. It felt like sand paper against my tongue. Far from the moist meat other blogs described. And it supposedly comes with a “special sauce” but I certainly didn’t witness any.

The lamb kebabs (which come sans skewer, not that that should matter, I guess) were mediocre; some pieces were so fatty you simply couldn’t chew them. Even our dog didn’t want any. I was told, however, the chicken kebabs (which were more like chicken wings, with bones and all) were good, but the person who ate that plate asked us to never order from there again, so it couldn’t have been that memorable either.

The Shepherd’s salad was basically cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, and green peppers. I added it to my gyro plate, which made it tolerable. The babaganoush was not enjoyed and the feta in the rolled boureks was beyond salty. My mother, who loves all kinds of cheese, didn’t even enjoy it. Even the pita bread left much to be desired.

We also ordered dessert. The rice pudding was watery and not that great, but the baklava actually was, although I seemed to be the only person who thought so. It was the one bright spot of the whole meal for me. It made me wonder if they actually made it or if they order it from another place.

Have you eaten there? Did I just catch them on a really off night?

Extremely disappointed with this establishment. I ordered a simple gyro and waited about 20-25 minutes for my food. Not to mention, some of the pieces of the meat were extremely pink, and there was no white sauce, only hot sauce! Thank god I got a side of hummus (paid $3 for a tiny portion = rip off!) otherwise I basically would’ve had a pita filled with a ton of tomatoes, lettuce, and onions. You guys should visit Evelyn’s or Effe’s in New Brunswick and learn a thing or two about preparing food from them. Do not recommend this place at all!
