Review: Casual Thai

Hot Thai In The City

In the mood for Thai food early one Friday evening, Chris and I decided on Casual Thai in Hoboken. The restaurant is narrow with two rows of wooden tables lining each side of the space. On one side was a bench with silk pillows instead of chairs, against a dark exposed brick wall. The softly draped fabric added to the intimate feel and the Thai décor accents were subtle enough to set the atmosphere without feeling contrived.

The wait staff provided exceptional service, refilling water regularly, and standing by to address any needs. There was only one other couple in the restaurant (probably because it was only 5:45), but it appeared the space could accommodate a small group, and is certainly appropriate for a casual date as well.

Casual Thai doesn’t have a liquor license so we just had water with our meals (though Thai iced tea and other soft drinks were available). Because we were just in the mood for a basic meal, we only ordered entrees. The menu was extensive and I liked that almost any dish could be ordered with vegetables, beef, chicken or seafood.

Chris had the Chicken Pad Thai, which was served on a plate with a circular polka dot design. It was a generous portion, the noodles were delicious, and the dish was prepared well, but we both agreed it could have used a little more seasoning -it was just too sweet.

On the other hand, my pineapple paradise vegetable curry (which was served in a beautiful earthenware bowl) had plenty of heat. When I took the first bite, I wasn’t sure if I could handle that level of spice for the whole meal. After a couple of bites, though, I not only acclimated to it, but really enjoyed it. The spiciness combined well with the sweet coconut milk and pineapple, while the Thai basil added a hint of savory.

I don’t usually love tofu (I just eat it for the protein), but this was perfectly done. The cubes were fried with a crispy outside yet a pleasantly chewy texture that absorbed the flavor of the curry. There was a diverse mix of crisply cooked fresh vegetables like broccoli, green beans and carrots. The curry was served with brown rice (I was offered a choice of white or brown) and it helped ease some of the heat. After eating all the vegetables and rice, I asked for the remaining sauce at the bottom of the bowl to be put in a container, and I look forward to eating it over some roasted vegetables I have at home.

When the check came, our server also brought us each a small wedge of watermelon, which was a refreshing compliment to the flavorful meal. Including tip, the total bill was $25, which seemed fair for two satisfying and delicious meals. This was one of the best Thai restaurants I’ve tried and I recommend it especially because of the diverse (seemingly authentic) curry options.
