It’s Doughnut Day!

Mmmmmmm…Forbidden Doughnut

Today, Krispy Kreme will be giving out free doughnuts but you won’t be getting any!

Unfortunately, Kristpy Kreme, its inviting red light and warm fresh doughnuts are not located in New Jersey.

Fortunately for Jerseyites, one of the top ten doughnut places in the country is located within our great state. If you want to celebrate by patronizing Obco’s Donuts in Tom’s River, they are highly rated by MSN City Guides.

Merry Christmas

Hello Folks!

I bet all of you are way too busy trimming trees and drinking nog to bother reading things on the internet. But if you’re checking in, don’t despair. There’s plenty to look forward to:

The elusive Nicole Little will be bringing you her first review in months: Lee’s Hawaiian Islander, Lyndhurst.

Your very favorite Executive Editor, Donna M., will be writing about her experiences chowing down in Weehawken and North Arlington.

If you’re looking for something to do, I suggest you all go see Sweeney Todd. The critics are loving it!

Happy Holidays,

Your Friends at GOJ

Cheap Food Alert: Johnny Carino’s

Normally readers, I would never suggest that you support chain restaurants in lieu of local businesses.

That is unless a nearby chain featured the best deal ever!

Donna and I took our men over to Johnny Carino’s in the Clifton Commons the other night for their two for $19.99 special.

That’s right; two people receive unlimited soup or salad, an entrée (from an abbreviated but tasty menu) and get to split a ginormous dessert – all for less than 20 bucks.

Our waiter assured us that the deal was valid all day/night – 7 days a week but wasn’t sure how long the special would last. According to their website, it’s still going.

So eat cheap while you can. It’s a great way to catch up with friends on you tight holiday budget!

Review: Cafe D’ Amici

Some Enchanted Evening

Once upon a time there was a restaurant named Bella Napoli. It was a very popular little restaurant that everyone raved about but it got too big for its tiny location and moved from Clifton to Bloomfield.

In its place, next to Pizza Hut by the entrance to Route 3, Café D’ Amici moved in.

Princess Ali had always wanted to try this cute local establishment, but for no particular reason, never made time to go. Her handsome suitor, in an attempt to court her properly for a change, decided to take her there for wine and supper.

The princess and her suitor ordered a bottle of white wine and started their meal with a stuffed artichoke and fried calamari. She felt silly using her hands to eat such a buttery food for the first time but thoroughly enjoyed the tender garlicky flesh of its leaves. The fried calamari was crispy delicious.

The princess was convinced that she’d bust out of the corset her maidens had fastened so tightly even before the salad course arrived at the table.

When the main course arrived she whistled a jaunty tune, summoning her birds to come and loosen up the straps of her dress. “Ah, room to breath,” she thought. But what she meant was, “room to eat.”

The chicken giambotta that she had ordered was delightful and plentiful – enough to feed all the king’s men. There were several strips of chicken breast, a ton of peppers both hot and sweet, and delicious roasted potatoes.

Her suitor ordered the gnocci with meat sauce. The princess, who ate half of his plate while his back was turned, deemed it suitable for a queen but the suitor complained that it was oddly sweet.

The suitor was pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived – that even a commoner could afford to eat like royalty – wine, appetizers, and entrees only totaled about $70.

After, they saw Enchanted which I hope explains this bizarre review.

Review: Bourbon BBQ

BBQ Could Be Better

As my boyfriend and I lazed about on Black Friday, avoiding all stores, places near stores, and roads that lead to stores, we started whining about how we wanted some nice leftover-turkey sandwiches. So on the day after Thanksgiving, we headed out to Boston Market like fools.

We got about a block when my boyfriend saw the big BBQ sign and veered into the parking lot. It was empty with the exception of the cars of two employees and a Large-Marge style truck.

The atmosphere was quaint. The interior was decorated with old metal RC-cola signs. The tables were covered with red and white checked table cloths and came with a roll of paper towels – because napkins are never enough when you’re eating ribs. We smirked at the menu that said they stayed open until 9 p.m. or until they ran out of meat and were drawn in by their declaration of BBQ:

We do run out of meat on busy days
This is not fast food; all meat is made to order
Every BBQ is different, we do ours
Ribs and chicken are cooked for many hours; the red is the smoke ring
The shaker on the table is the ‘Gun Powder’ use it to season the meat
No Gas, no Electricity, just hard and fruit wood smoke
This BBQ is serious food to prepare, have fun while eating eat and do not worry about the etiquette or plates, just Enjoy

Since it was the day after Thanksgiving, there were only two employees working at the time and only one customer. Because of this, Bourbon BBQ housed more flies than people – which definitely turned my stomach before I even saw the food.

They were out of chicken so I was forced to abandon my original order, a buffalo chicken wrap (what did you expect?), and go for the hickory pork BBQ sandwich. I had my choice of white bread, wheat bread or a roll and was given a soda and choice of side dish as a part of the combo meal. My boyfriend got a full rack of St. Louis ribs and tips that included six ribs and his choice of two sides and a soda.

My pulled pork sandwich on-a-roll was really served on a bun - a bun that turned soggy about 30 seconds after hitting my plate. It was nearly impossible to lift to my mouth since the mushy bottom fell to pieces as soon as I tried to lift it, but it was no less delicious eaten with a knife and fork. The meat was flavorful and juicy. It definitely didn’t need the onion and pickle slices added to it from the pile that had been thrown on the side of my tray. The onion rings (which were a dollar extra) where battered, not breaded (my favorite) and although greasy and heavy, made a nice addition to my fat-kid lunch

My boyfriend’s ribs were not saucy but seasoned. He chose the baked beans and potato salad as sides. The potato salad was bland and the potatoes were hard and undercooked. The beans had as much pulled pork in them as I did on my sandwich. It was tasty and filling – and could probably serve as a meal in itself.

For a counter-service restaurant, $30 seemed a bit much for two to eat – but we did get a lot. Neither one of us finished our meals.

If you’re in the area, Bourbon BBQ is worth a try – but it’s definitely not worth going out of the way for adequate food, counter-service and RC brand colas.

Why is GOJ in such a Slump?

Hey Reader,

Have you been asking yourself why our posts have been so few and far between? Did you spend Monday crying at your desk because there’s less for you to read when you’re slacking off at work because it seems we’re slacking off at work?

Well, we’re not!

You see, Donna and I are going through a bit of a life change. No, no chin hair here. We’re too young for that. But new jobs, commitments and an endless string of bridal party tasks have been eating up our time and money.

And so we will continue to keep posting - but have patience until we get our shit together and can maintain the kind of consistency that will make you love us again.

Fungus Fest - The Epilogue

Notes about Fungus Fest

- Greeters were wearing Boy Scout-like uniforms with mushroom patches on them.
- Most booth runners were over 50, some with Amish-style beards.
- Was not so much a “fest” as a “fair.” An 8th grade science fair, to be precise - where everyone’s project is about mushrooms.
- There was a one-hour mushroom slide show. (My boyfriend had no interest in seeing it, which is why he still has a girlfriend.)
- In the mycological association’s letter to new members, (I’m not one, by the way) the president boasts that the association will provide a place for you to make new friends who won’t think you’re crazy.

Photos will be added shortly…
