Review: Donovan’s in Sea Bright

Finally, we are in full-swing tee-shirt weather and nothing has New Jersey written all over it more than relaxing at an outdoor beach club.

Sipping a cold one with an ocean view is a favorite pastime we wait all winter (and dreary spring) to enjoy. Donovan’s Reef in Sea Bright is worth standing in line for, especially because of the buzz that says it may be demolished to build none other than more ridiculously overpriced condos! That’s Jersey for ya.

Review: Zack’s Oak Bar & Restaurant

Assume The Best About This Unassuming Spot

On a tree-lined corner off-the-beaten path in Hoboken, you will find a pleasant place to eat and drink at Zack’s Oak Bar & Restaurant.

A handful of tiny, umbrella-d outdoor tables greet you as you approach Zack’s little, flower box-lined fence.

Inside is equally cheery and inviting. As you enter, you’ll see a few rows of dark wooden booths in the dining area to your right. (Author’s note: The entrance to the restaurant is on 3rd. There is a door on the Willow Ave side of the building, but it’s exit-only and has no handle on it. You will look like a jackass if you try to open it. Don’t ask me how I know that.)

Hoboken Arts and Music Festival – May 6, 2007

Mark Your Calendars & Don’t Miss The Next One

While I have been buried under the responsibilities of my real job for the past month and a half, I couldn’t let the month of May end without letting folks know about one of my favorite outdoor events of the year and the official kick-off to summer – the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival.

ClickThis: Zach Braff Honors New Jersey

GoOutJersey loves Zach Braff and Zach loves New Jersey.
Braff, creator of the movie Garden State and star of the NBC tv show Scrubs, is from South Orange, and did Jerseyites proud Saturday during his opening monologue for the season finale of Saturday Night Live. Take a look:

Co-Worker Characters

jerseywaitress.pngOne of the greatest things about working in a restaurant is all of the interesting characters you can work with. If your experiences are anything like mine, they will become like a little family. But in every family there are always some black sheep. Here are a few of the co-workers you may not invite out with you after your shift for drinks – but the job just wouldn’t be the same without them.

Fantasy Baseball Fans: Get out of the house!

Ok fantasy nerds, it’s a known fact that you love to sit in your apartment and watch ESPN’s live stat-tracker, but there are other options out there for you, right in the town of Hoboken. Heck, bring a pen and pad of paper to a bar if you really feel compelled to write down a running total of RBI’s and runs scored for your team; it’s better than sitting alone in your apartment. To celebrate the fantasy baseball season that’s starting to heat up, (as we slowly head toward summer weather), here is a list of the Top 5 Hoboken bars to watch baseball and track your fantasy squad.

Welcome to Summer

Well kids, it’s almost summertime again.

Memorial Day is little more than a week away, and we here at GoOutJersey figured that our fellow Metro-Jerseyites will be looking for places to go down the shore on the weekends.

Fine. Go ahead. Leave us. See if we care! Our cheap Irish skin may burn and freckle in the sun, but we don’t begrudge you your summer fun.

So before you go, check in with us on Thursdays when we’ll be featuring articles from our Shore-Jersey correspondents. We’ll have previews of shore towns and reviews of seaside bars, restaurants, cafés, etc.

Now, with no further ado, we’re pleased to introduce our first summer preview of Point Pleasant, written by our newest contributor, Angie Leadfoot.

Shore Preview: Point Pleasant

With Memorial Day rapidly approaching, what better way to spend a hot summer day than at the Jersey shore? Jump on Parkway South to exit 98 or cruise along Route 34 or 35 for the scenic path to Point Pleasant Beach. There is so much going on there from coffee shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques to sandwich shops and ice cream parlors. It’s a nice quiet area from Labor Day to Memorial Day but once summer hits, it’s all the rage.

After the drive over, there is no better way to satiate your travel-induced hunger than near Arnold Avenue, at Frankie’s Bar and Grill . It has a nice casual atmosphere with a large bar and generous seating. Their burgers are big and the beer is as cold as you’d hoped. I have always gotten my money’s worth here. Then, for some after-dinner caffeine or an early-morning pick-me-up, check out The Grind Coffee House on Arnold Avenue for your favorite flavored blend (and note that they feature a new lunch special everyday).

Window shop down Bay Avenue filled with antiques, furniture, jewelry, and odds and ends. Wander into Fabulous Finds, an eclectic gift shop, and you are likely to dig up something fun. Point Pleasant is home to the original Jersey Mike’s Subs – delicious, huge and inexpensive – as well as Hoffman’s Ice Cream , which makes their own ice cream and serves a multitude of flavors, including flavor of the month (April’s was creamsicle).

But, hey! You didn’t drive all this way just to check out stuff indoors! Jenkinson’s Boardwalk will greet you with the smell of the ocean, the sound of the waves and the sight of bikinis (if you have the eyesight for such tiny things). You can win your girlfriend a stuffed animal at one of the game booths or succumb to your sweet tooth at the numerous candy and ice cream shops. I’m personally fond of Dippin Dots, those tiny balls of flash-frozen ice cream that make you think of astronaut food. I tried them first at Jenk’s and have loved them since!

If you didn’t stuff your face too much, ride the Himalayas at Jenk’s amusement park. For those with queasy stomachs, opt for the train around the park. Once you’ve had your fill of exciting rides, look for the large, coral-colored building – Jenkinson’s Aquarium . It is home to seals, sharks, penguins and a touch tank. You can actually touch the sea stars and sharks in the tank! Further north, you will hear the sound of Ol’ Blue Eyes pouring from a spot the locals call the Sinatra house. The boardwalk ends at the Manasquan Inlet , a nice place to relax and watch the boats come in.

As the sun sets, the nightlife awakens. At Jenk’s Club or Martell’s Tiki Bar , you will find an eclectic mix. Live music and DJs have the dance floor packed! Beware of the “pumpin’ fists” dance maneuver! The Tiki Bar is more relaxed with lots of seating for the young and old, bennys or tourists.

There is only one thing to do after a night of drinking and dancing: eat again! The Ocean Bay Diner, aka OB Diner on Route 35 is open 24/7 and serves typical diner food along with Italian and Greek dishes. I suggest the pork roll sandwich with cheese, a Jersey favorite, of course!

Review: The Magic Pot Fondue Bistro

Dangerously Delicious

I love fondue. I love the concept of an entire pot of melted cheese, existing only so that I can dunk stuff into it. The melted chocolate variety is a can’t miss as well. So I figured an entire fondue restaurant would have to be awesome. I was partially right.

The restaurant is located in a cute retail district of Edgewater, and I spotted lots of other intriguing eateries that I now want to try. The atmosphere is hip and dimly lit, with sconces and gauzy fabric hanging strategically from the walls. Unobtrusive jazzy music plays in the background. At the center of each table is a heating element for keeping the fondue nice and bubbly. Be careful, the table is plugged into an outlet near the floor. I nearly ripped it out of the wall when I pulled my chair out.

Click This: Becoming a Knight in Shining Armor

I love craigslist.

In my free time I like to find inappropriate want ads, usually for porn actors/actresses, and post them as comments/career suggestions on my friends’ MySpace pages.

But today I found my new favorite want ad. It’s for Medieval Times . They are looking for Knights and Squires.

If anyone would like to apply and let me know what the interview process is for a Knight, please Click This! And don’t forget to email me your story.

And if you’re just looking to make $8 bucks an hour whilst mingling with faux royalty (and enjoy running in the sand), you can go ahead and Click This!
