Why is GOJ in such a Slump?

Hey Reader,

Have you been asking yourself why our posts have been so few and far between? Did you spend Monday crying at your desk because there’s less for you to read when you’re slacking off at work because it seems we’re slacking off at work?

Well, we’re not!

You see, Donna and I are going through a bit of a life change. No, no chin hair here. We’re too young for that. But new jobs, commitments and an endless string of bridal party tasks have been eating up our time and money.

And so we will continue to keep posting - but have patience until we get our shit together and can maintain the kind of consistency that will make you love us again.

Fungus Fest - The Epilogue

Notes about Fungus Fest

- Greeters were wearing Boy Scout-like uniforms with mushroom patches on them.
- Most booth runners were over 50, some with Amish-style beards.
- Was not so much a “fest” as a “fair.” An 8th grade science fair, to be precise - where everyone’s project is about mushrooms.
- There was a one-hour mushroom slide show. (My boyfriend had no interest in seeing it, which is why he still has a girlfriend.)
- In the mycological association’s letter to new members, (I’m not one, by the way) the president boasts that the association will provide a place for you to make new friends who won’t think you’re crazy.

Photos will be added shortly…

Review: Amanda’s

Where Quality Is Not Sacrificed For the Early Birds

Amanda’s is a beautiful restaurant in a renovated brownstone with a long main dining room and smaller dining rooms to the sides. The service is stellar without being at all pretentious, and the commitment to quality is evident in each course. It is as if they are intentionally striving to be the finest restaurant in NJ.

While the space, service and menu exude romance and it is a great date spot, I’ve also been there for group celebrations as well as with school-aged children. Two couples I know have even rented the downstairs for their small wedding receptions. The brunch is wonderful and their main dinner menu is also excellent, but the best deal in town is by far the “early bird.”

How much would you expect to pay for a three course meal in one of Jersey’s quality restaurants? Well if you go to Amanda’s in Hoboken, Monday-Saturday at 5:00 or 5:30, you will only pay . . . are you ready for this? $14.00. They also offer a bottle of their house wine for $20. So for under $50 plus tax and tip you can finely dine with wine, appetizer, entrée and dessert.

The server will always pull the chair out for you as you are seated at a pre-set table. The dishes are decorative only and are removed once you place your order. The water glasses are always kept full and you often aren’t even aware they are being filled. If you leave the table to use the restroom or take a phone call, you will find that in your absence, your napkin was neatly folded and placed at your setting. Almost as soon as you are seated, a server comes around with a basket of warm rolls and uses tongs to place one on each bread plate.

For my first course, I chose the chilled melon soup that had hints of pineapple and pesto. It was a little different from anything I’ve ever tasted, but in a good way. Chris ordered the salad which is served with goat cheese and raisins over baby mixed greens and endive.

Because they don’t have a vegetarian option for the early bird dinner, I chose the Flounder stuffed with duxalles (which I found out is a mixture of shallots and mushrooms sautéed in butter) and wrapped in cabbage leaves. It was served over white rice in a cream sauce. I did think the rice could have cooked another couple of minutes but the flavors were still wonderful. Chris enjoyed his short ribs and was impressed that they were boneless. It was served over mashed potatoes and root vegetables with gravy.

We both ordered the chocolate mousse for dessert (other choices were apple strudel and key lime pie). It was served on a plate and encased in a chocolate cup. The mousse was topped with whipped cream, a halved strawberry and a mint sprig. It was a perfect dessert.

We left feeling very satisfied. The portions are just right, so even after a three course meal that included a rich dessert, we didn’t feel overly full.

Even if you can’t make it for the early bird special, I strongly recommend you find a special occasion to go to Amanda’s.

No Substitute for Jersey Gambling

Screw Yonkers! Stay in NJ

Has everyone else seen the commercials for Empire City? The young, happy, attractive couple takes the quick jaunt up to the Yonkers Raceway and wins fabulous jackpots from newly-added slot machines before the older, less attractive, and angry couple makes their way through traffic and down to Atlantic City.

I like money AND fun almost as much as I hate traffic, so my friend and I decided to venture out of my beloved home state in order to take a daytrip to Empire City, where I once again learned the harsh lesson that advertising can be deceiving.

We arrived after some confusion involving the directions As we drove out of our way to avoid the valet parking and over to the non-pay area, we were greeted by the smell of horse poop and the sight of Yonkers Raceway.

We hustled to the shuttle stop because, like all the other slot-playing casino patrons, we’re a little chubby and a lot lazy and couldn’t be bothered with walking the dozens of yards to the building.

Once inside, there was the melodious ringing of machines clanging in the air. Overweight and elderly people were everywhere. Waitresses bustled around with drinks on their trays and slot machines ranging from one-cent minimum bets to a dollar were everywhere.

The penny slots were mostly taken so we found two seats at the two-cent machines. The waitress came over with only soft drinks on her tray and we took two of the complimentary beverages. Within minutes, my first $20 was lost and I slowly came to the realization that I hate slot machines.

There’s no action. There’s no strategy and it sucks down your money like I suck down a cocktail. Oh, and speaking of cocktails…YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM.

It costs $3 for a warm plastic cup of what tasted like Coors Light that had been carried around by some waitress for God-knows-how-long. Then when I went to the bar for a vodka, I was charged $7 for one of the weakest alcoholic beverages I’ve ever tasted.

In order to keep ourselves from losing our money too quickly, we alternated between long-shot betting on horse races and feeding the slot machines. About two hours and 150 bucks later, we took the cash we had left and headed upstairs to the the Lillian Russell Café for dinner.

The curse of poor service that has been plaguing me in NJ since the start of this website followed me up to NY. The hostess forgot to give us menus; the waitress served the table that sat after us before taking our orders; our drinks never came, and our food (appetizers and entrees) was served all together and incorrectly. And to top it off, the bread our sandwiches were on was stale, the meat tasted old, and the meals were generally bland and disappointing.

Maybe it’s just the luck of the Jerz but I’ve never left Atlantic City as a loser. I kind of rock at roulette. There are a ton of restaurants within walking distance of any casino so the food usually doesn’t disappoint. And there’s a beach, outlets, Pat’s King of Steaks, and hookers. A few hundred slot machines at a racetrack does not a casino make.

If I want to do any serious gambling in the future, I’ll deal with the long drive down the shore; if I need quick fix, there’s always the Meadowlands Racetrack. It’s close, it’s good cheap fun, and it always makes me feel pretty. (I promise, if you’re under 30 and have all of your teeth, you’ll be one of the best looking people there!)
